Darkness in the Water
We have been talking about hosting Small Group Photography Workshops (think Photowalk, but in-Studio) and FINALLY put a full concept together for our first Workshop earlier this month.
The theme was inspired by the teen girl from the misunderstood Gothic family series recently released on a streaming service...can you figure out which one? ;)
Of course, we immediately thought of the incredibly talented Model, AJ Van Hovel as the perfect subject for the session. Once she was on board, it was on to planning out the session.
Tim wanted the water to be black...think Gothic Milk Bath. We knew there were some bath products companies online offering a product that *might* work...but we didn't want AJ to be overwhelmed with all the scents and unknown ingredients that typically accompany the fancy store-bought bath bombs.
So, I stopped by our locally owned and operated bath and body care company, Sunrise Soap Company for some information. After a surprised "you want to do what?!?!" reply, the owner was very helpful in educating me on what would be a safe product to use for the session. She even tested the product in their shop to make sure it would work for us before we purchased our own supply.
We also lined up a Makeup Artist to give AJ the a muted Gothic makeup for the session.
We had recently connected with one of our local flower shops, Flower World of York for another session at the Studio that we wanted fresh flowers for. We stopped in the shop a few days before the Workshop to inquire if they had any unusable red roses that they might be interested in parting with. After another surprised reaction, they agreed to sell us 2 dozen red roses at an amazing price, since they couldn't sell them in bouquets any longer.
The day of the session, we set up our blow-up kiddie pool in the Studio and draped it with fabric from Joann Fabrics that I had sewn together to cover up the bright blue and white colors in the pool.
We filled the pool with warm water and mixed in the product we purchased to make the water black.
We added in the roses part of the way through the session and ended with fire. Tim took the class offered by SBJ Studios and we have enjoyed incorporating this technique into some of our Senior Portraits and Custom Activity photo sessions.
After the session was complete, we backed up our photos to our Cloud storage and prepared the proofs using Adobe Lightroom. We loaded Tim's photo proofs to Photobiz for AJ to choose her favorites for retouching. You can use Photobiz to deliver your final image gallery as well as sell prints with less fees than other Photography eCommerce options.
